Getting ready for hyrox

If you’ve been training hard in HYROX-style classes, race day is your chance to put that work to the test. The biggest mistake many athletes make is changing everything in the final week. Instead, focus on consistency: keep your routine familiar, reduce training volume slightly, and prioritize sleep. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep in the days leading up to the event, and avoid cramming in extra fitness at the last minute. The goal is to arrive at the start line feeling fresh, confident, and ready to perform.

Nutrition and hydration are two of the most important race-day factors you can control.

In the 24–48 hours before your event, increase your intake of easy-to-digest carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, oats, potatoes, and fruit. Drink water consistently throughout the day rather than trying to “catch up” the night before. On race morning, eat a familiar meal 2–3 hours before your start time—something that gives you energy without upsetting your stomach. Avoid experimenting with new supplements, gels, or pre-workouts on race day.

Your warm-up should prepare you for the demands of the race without leaving you fatigued.

Spend 10–15 minutes gradually raising your heart rate, mobilizing the hips, ankles, and shoulders, and practicing a few race-specific movements such as light running, lunges, wall balls, or sled technique if space allows. The goal is to feel switched on, not exhausted. A good warm-up helps reduce early-race anxiety and allows you to settle into your pace more quickly.

Finally, remember that HYROX rewards smart pacing as much as fitness.

Start slightly more conservatively than you think you should, especially on the first run and opening stations. Many athletes lose time by going out too hard and struggling later in the race. Break the event into manageable sections, focus on smooth transitions, and stay composed when fatigue hits. Trust the work you’ve done in training—race day is about executing the plan, not proving how hard you can start. Good luck, and enjoy the experience!
