As the weather turns hotter, we always hear this question: “Can I still train in this heat?”
The answer: yes!
You just have to be prepared.
With that in mind, here are our top tips for staying active in the heat.
1. Time Your Workouts
Before you head outside for any length of time, be sure to check the weather app. Aim for early morning or late evening sessions to avoid the peak heat of the day. If you must work out during hot hours, find a shaded area or an air-conditioned gym.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout. Consider an electrolyte drink to replenish lost salts through sweat.
3. Adjust Your Intensity
Be mindful of the heat and adjust the intensity of your workout as needed. High-intensity intervals in extreme heat can lead to overheating, so consider scaling down the workout if necessary.
4. Stay Well-Fuelled
Eat a balanced meal before your CrossFit workout, including carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Post-workout, refuel with a combination of protein and carbohydrates to aid recovery.
5. Listen To Your Body
Pay close attention to how your body feels during your workout. If you feel overheated or unwell, stop exercising immediately and seek shade or a cooler environment.
Adapting to CrossFit in the heat requires a combination of common sense, preparedness, and understanding your own limits. If you’re new to CrossFit or have any medical conditions, consult with a coach or healthcare professional for personalised guidance on training in hot conditions.
